Wow we've sure evolved...

Beloit College has released its annual Mindset list for the class of 2014.  This is created to help professors understand where the entering freshman class is "coming from" experience-wise.  When I first read the intro I thought, "Huh, how interesting." Then I read the list and it really hit me how much life has changed in the last 18 years.  Some of the things were occurring as I was a child myself but it's important periodically to look back and see how far we have come as a society.  I'm glad my children don't know there was a time when women weren't on the Supreme Court or that there was a time when second hand cigarette smoke wasn't considered toxic.

I'm glad my kids will grow up not remembering a time when it was not considered possible to have a black or female President of the United States.

My kids look at me funny when I explained to them that Russia used to be a larger country and was named the U.S.S.R.

Here's a few excerpt from the list, (you can go here for the entire list):
1. Few in the class know how to write in cursive.
2. Email is just too slow, and they seldom if ever use snail mail.
3. “Go West, Young College Grad” has always implied “and don’t stop until you get to Asia…and learn Chinese along the way.”
4. Al Gore has always been animated.
5. Los Angelenos have always been trying to get along.
6. Buffy has always been meeting her obligations to hunt down Lothos and the other blood-suckers at Hemery High.
7. “Caramel macchiato” and “venti half-caf vanilla latte” have always been street corner lingo.
8. With increasing numbers of ramps, Braille signs, and handicapped parking spaces, the world has always been trying harder to accommodate people with disabilities.
Which ones on the list are you most struck by the significance of?

I think it's a shame that most schools do not teach cursive anymore :(
